Google Assistant is available on devices of all shapes and sizes, but the vast majority of useful smart speakers that support it are designed to be used in one place, indoors. I’ve been wanting a solution to bring Assistant and, in turn, Chromecast audio around my home wire-free. As it turns out, the Sonos Roam is exactly what I’ve been looking for. Back in 2015, Google debuted the Chromecast Audio as a way to make your home audio system smarter by allowing you to play Cast capable apps. The dongle replaced the Chromecast’s usual HDMI out with an audio out port, which could be connected to a speaker or home theater.

It has built-in Chromecast, Airplay 2, Bluetooth, direct streaming services such as Spotify Connect, etc. Heck, it's even "Sonos compatible" (which really just means tested to turn on when Sonos connect/port gets a signal or whatnot). Many other brands attempt to lock you out of something .

The Google Home app is designed to show you the status of your home and keep you up to date with what you may have missed. Check in on your home anytime and see a recap of recent events. You can also get a notification if something important happens while you’re away.
It just doesn't support Sonos or Echos because nothing does; they're closed ecosystems. So if I do get it, I can choose Nests or JBL or HK or even Apple products for the other rooms and such. So for me I'm kinda doing the opposite of you.

Ask questions like “Where can I change my privacy settings? ” to get answers to the most common privacy and security questions. As you’d expect from the Sonos brand, Roam sounds incredible, especially for its size. The little speaker is tiny enough to go just about anywhere but brings volume that I’d expect from something twice the size. That quality is best heard at or below 50% volume where I found clarity as its best, but if you need to crank up the volume you won’t be disappointed. This thing is great both for a gardening companion and for filling your backyard with music during a BBQ.

I’m not sure what level setting to recommend. Just do a little experimentation and trust your ears. Leave it at the setting that sounds best to you. The Google Nest Audio can work with numerous other Google speakers and third-party Chromecast built-in devices to play multiroom audio. Use the Home app to control on/off, volume, playback, inputs, and more for your connected streaming and media devices. You might run into issues on a large property, but as long as your expectations are in check, I doubt you’ll be disappointed. When you are out of Wi-Fi range, you’ll of course lose access to Google Assistant, but you can still use this product as a normal Bluetooth speaker with your smartphone. Due to the ongoing Sonos feud about speaker grouping, you can’t pair the Sonos Roam with other Google Assistant speakers around your home to have music playing simultaneously.
In that proposed design, one would imagine that the dock would be able to continue functioning even while the tablet is detached. For that to be possible, the Pixel tablet’s speaker/dock would need to have its own Chromecast-capable hardware built in. Following through on that idea, it’s plausible that the arrival of this supposed “Chromecast Audio” is simply intended to let the dock be “smart” without its tablet connected. At the original Chromecast Audio’s launch, we praised it in our review for offering the key benefits of Sonos speakers at a fraction of the price. I must say I am disappointed at the lack of Chromecast, I honestly didnt even read prior, I assumed it would have it, thats shame on me. I am not a huge fan of Airplay and I also use android and iOS devices.
I live in North Carolina but it was unusually cold last winter, and so far our fall and early winter have been super cold too. I don’t want my legs to shrivel up again. Looking forward to trying out Zwift and TrainerRoad.
