Otto also has a son, Ser Gwayne Hightower, who participated in the Heir’s Tournament in the series premiere. House Targaryen are pureblood Valyrians, and Viserys brokers a political alliance with one of the only other Valyrian houses, Velaryon, when he commands Rhaenrya to marry her second cousin Laenor Velaryon. Despite this — and the fact they’re related — Daemon still pursues a marriage with his niece Rhaenyra.

The Times TV team will be with you — and 10 or so million of your closest friends — every step of the way with episode-by-episode recaps, explainers and deep dives into the world of Westeros, 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen. We’ll let you know which characters and houses to keep an eye on as the new prequel unfurls, analyze key scenes, offer context on a complicated fictional universe and speak to the talent behind the show about how it all came together. The only thing we can’t promise is that your favorites will make it to the end of the season. When you play the game of thrones, after all, you win or you die. And with the series already renewed for Season 2, no one is winning outright anytime soon.

Hopefully, we will at least see the inevitable showdown between Daemon and (Mini-Me) Aemond, and if that plot point follows the Fire and Blood book, both men should be very afraid. House of the Dragon has spent more time politicking than dragon-riding in much of its first season. But by the final episode, the dragons — and their use in the coming Dance of the Dragons — take center stage. The daughter of Lord Corlys “the Sea Snake” Velaryon and Princess Rhaenys “the Queen Who Never Was” Targaryen — meaning she and her brother Laenor Velaryon are descended from two noble Valyrian Houses. Lord Corlys and Princess Rhaenys unsuccessfully tried to arrange a marriage between young Laena and King Viserys after his wife died in childbirth.

Cast and characters

The two Targaryen siblings, namely Rhaenyra and Aegon, were seemingly on the cusp of war until one of Rhaenyra’s sons was brutally murdered by Aegon’s brother. The second season will depict the aftermath of this event and will majorly highlight Rhaenyra’s response to the loss of her offspring. The second season of the celebrated series was confirmed by its makers just five days after the premiere of the opening edition.

Cast

Viserys later chooses to marry Alicent Hightower, with whom he has a son Aegon, creating a crisis of succession that sets off the first Targaryen civil war, known as the Dance of the Dragons. The first season received highly positive reviews, with praise towards its character development, visual effects, writing, score by Ramin Djawadi, and performances. However, the pacing, specifically of the time jumps, and the dark lighting of some scenes were criticized. The series premiere was watched by over 10 million viewers across the linear channels and HBO Max on the first day, the biggest in HBO's history. At the 80th Golden Globe Awards, House of the Dragon won Best Television Series – Drama and D'Arcy was nominated for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama.

Casting

Following the immense success of season one, its successor is set to drop later this year, with the majority of the cast returning to occupy their roles. Before George R.R. Martin’s Westeros endured the Game of Thrones, Aegon the Conquerer set up his House of Targaryen to rule the Seven Kingdoms. Now, HBO is gearing up to show us the mayhem that happened when this house splintered into two sides that each claimed the Iron Throne.

Whether you’re new to Westeros or making a long-awaited return, here’s everything you need know about the ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel, updated weekly. Who’s who in ‘House of the Dragon’? Our guide to the key characters

Rhaenyra is likely the first rider of Syrax, a dragon she named after a Valyrian goddess when the princess claimed the dragon at 9 years old. Syrax was nearly as large and threatening as Caraxes, though Rhaenyra has not ridden her into a true battle. The Hand — or lead advisor — of King Viserys, loyal to both his king and the realm.

House Velaryon

House of the Dragon is an American fantasy drama television series created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal for HBO. A prequel to Game of Thrones (2011–2019), it is the second television series in the A Song of Ice and Fire franchise. Condal and Miguel Sapochnik served as the showrunners for the first season. Featuring an ensemble cast, the show portrays the events leading up to the beginning of the decline of House Targaryen, a devastating war of succession known as the "Dance of the Dragons". As war looms closer in House of the Dragon, the noble houses of Westeros are already beginning to choose sides in the rivalry for the Iron Throne between Rhaenyra and Aegon Targaryen. The shifting political alliances and ever-expanding cast of characters can be hard to keep up with, particularly since so many weren’t featured in Game of Thrones.

In some cases these are dragons have never accepted riders, while others are dragons whose riders have died, but haven’t yet bonded with another rider. Meleys is known as the Red Queen thanks to her red scales and pink wing membrane. Meleys is now an old dragon, but in her younger days she was perhaps the swiftest and most nimble of all the Westerosi dragons. Jason is the Lord of Casterly Rock and appreciates the luxuries of his station.

The son of “the Sea Snake,” Lord Corlys Velaryon, and “the Queen Who Never Was,” Princess Rhaenys Targaryen — meaning he and his sister Laena Velaryon are very Valyrian. A dragon-rider who fought alongside Lord Corlys and Prince Daemon in the war for the Stepstones. Marries the Realm’s most eligible bachelorette — Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen — with an understanding that they are free to (secretly) indulge in their true interests outside of their vows. Ser Harrold Westerling is a long-standing member of the Kingsguard, having begun his service under Jaehaerys’ rule. In Game of Thrones, the only time House Westerling popped up was when they surrendered their seat to Robb Stark.

Raised by her father and stepmother Rhaenyra Targaryen in Dragonstone after her mother’s death. King Viserys Targaryen’s younger brother and presumptive heir — or so he believes. A formidable warrior, Prince Daemon serves as the commander of the City Watch of King’s Landing.

Author George R.R. Martin is also actively involved as an executive producer. Season 1 of the series received eight Emmy nominations from the Television Academy on Wednesday, including one for Outstanding Drama Series. We shall also meet an endless stream of new character including Alys Rivers (Gayle Rankin), a mysterious healer from Harrenhal, who plays a pivotal role in the book.

Set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, this epic series tells the story of House Targaryen. While serving in the Kingsguard, Criston becomes very close with Rhaenyra, and the pair consummate their relationship prior to her engagement to Laenor. House Strong’s seat is Harrenhal, which hosted Jaehaerys I Targaryen’s assembly to choose an heir.

If you want to see how that part of Targaryen history unfolds, you’ll have to keep an eye on House of the Dragon. Game of Thrones is based on Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, but House of the Dragon is based on his “history” book, Fire & Blood. The book is credited as written by an Archmaester of Westeros, with various accounts on what happened during the Targaryen reign.

However, in the Song of Ice and Fire books, this house played a much more prominent role, with Robb marrying Jeyne Westerling rather than Talisa Maegyr, as he did in the series. The opening chapter of the series successfully reimagined Westeros, as it would’ve existed under the Targaryens. Season two is set to build upon the narrative of its successor, which ended on a massive cliffhanger.
